THE CROSSING! Today is a BIG day — one of the most anticipated, and for many Loopers, one of the most feared legs of the Great Loop. We’re leaving Carrabelle, Florida before sunrise with 145 miles of open Gulf ahead of us. Our destination is Crystal River, Florida, and there’s no hiding from the fact that this is a serious offshore run. The plan is simple: get underway early, keep a close eye on the wind and wave forecasts, and work with the waves and tide to give ourselves the smoothest crossing possible. But out here, forecasts are only forecasts. We’ll spend the day crossing open water, watching the conditions, managing the boat, and hoping we can make it to Crystal River before dark. This is one of those days on the Great Loop where the adventure gets very real. 145 miles. Open Gulf. One long day.
